What Are Fillings?

Fillings can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain,
silver amalgam, gold or a composite resin. The two
materials that most closely mimic the color and
appearance of the tooth are porcelain and composite resin,
which create a filling that is much less noticeable.

Silver amalgam used to be the most
common material used for fillings due to its low cost, but since
people want less noticeable fillings, composite resin is starting
to take the lead position as the material of choice

When Will I Need Fillings?

If you have a cavity, you will need a filling. When you have a cavity, the rotted part of your tooth is drilled out and removed. This leaves a hole in your tooth that can affect the strength and structure of the tooth. It can also leave the nerve exposed. This is why the tooth is filled in. The filling strengthens the tooth so you can bite or chew on it. The filling also covers the nerve so you won’t experience sensitivity to hot or cold. A dentist can perform a visual exam and take X-rays to look for cavities.
